This story — told by the anthropologist Gregory Bateson — is my favorite example of long-term planning ever. The story may be apocryphal, but in this case, I’m following the advice of the guy from The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance: if you’ve got a choice between printing truth and legend…print the legend.
