OMFG: Korg nanoKEY, nanoKONTROL, nanoPAD

June 12th, 2008 · 1 Comment

Over at Create Digital Music, Peter’s got some early info on Korg’s new line of MIDI controllers for laptop musicians. The keys on the nanoKEY are even supposed to be velocity sensitive.
This is literally what I’ve been dreaming of having for years — little controllers you can shove in your bag and use on the [...]

Moog Guitar

June 5th, 2008 · 1 Comment

Holy hell. The Moog Guitar isn’t a guitar synth — which one would expect from the legendary synth manufacturer. Instead, it’s some kinda weird variant on an Infinite Guitar, though it has more functionality. It can not only infinitely sustain tapped or plucked notes, but the opposite as well — it can automatically mute notes. [...]

Command-line audio processing tool?

June 3rd, 2008 · 4 Comments

I need to find an app — preferably Mac-compatible — that allows one to load and manipulate audio from the command line. Bonus points for VST or Audio Unit compatibility. Something scriptable.
Anybody know of anything like that?

“Ghosts In A Burning City” — Snippet

June 3rd, 2008 · 1 Comment

Here’s a snippet of the unfinished song “Ghosts In A Burning City”. No vox, and probably nowhere near the final instrumentation. But I like it.

Ghosts In A Burning City, The Song

June 1st, 2008 · No Comments

So as I’ve mentioned, I’m titling the album Ghosts In A Burning City, after a line from a Stephen Vincent Benet poem. But it occurred to me that that title was too evocative not to use in a song.
And so there will actually be a title track for the album, and it’s half-written. It’s a [...]

A Guide To Making Music With Your Mac

May 28th, 2008 · No Comments

I’ve written the first part of a four part guide to making music with your Mac over at TUAW. This part covers hardware audio interfaces — what to look for and how to choose your gear.
Pretty elementary for hardcore music nerds, but I think it’s useful for beginners. The next part’s gonna deal with software [...]

The Enemy Inside

May 27th, 2008 · No Comments

Ben Rubenstein has written a great piece over at PopMatters about the problem with being both a music critic and a friend of musicians. Call it the Stillwater Syndrome.
This is always a problem — as a critic, it’s your job to be honest and uncompromising. As a human, it’s your job to want your friends [...]

Dead Wasps

May 15th, 2008 · 1 Comment

Last night at the Beauty Bar, I got a chance to check out Manchester electro band Dead Wasps — and I wasn’t disappointed. They’re a really excellent dance band, and lead singer Hayley is totally rocking the Goldfrapp thing. (I talked to ‘em about doing a remix, too…hopefully that will pan out!)
They’re touring the US [...]
